Lifelong Trauma: Lessons from Self-Defence
As a self-defence instructor at Kombat Hall, I meet people from all walks of life. Some walk into class feeling nervous, others curious, but all of them share one common goal — to feel safer, stronger, and more confident. Through our self-defence classes in Gurgaon, I have witnessed incredible resilience, but some stories stay with you forever.
One such story was Sarah’s (name changed for privacy).
Sarah was only a teenager when she was assaulted by someone she trusted at a party. It was a painful act of betrayal that left a deep emotional scar. Years later, she attended a self-defence workshop I was conducting at her workplace. Even then, the trauma lingered quietly behind her eyes.
During the session, we practised techniques to escape from different holds and grabs. Afterward, Sarah approached me and asked what someone could do if they were pinned to the ground with their hands restrained.
As she described the situation, it became clear that she was reliving the moment of her assault.
To help her understand the situation practically, I asked Jasnoor, who had accompanied me to the workshop, to assist with a demonstration. Without explaining the exact background, I requested her to lie down while I recreated the position Sarah had described by pinning her hands to the ground.
I looked at Sarah and asked if this matched the situation she had experienced. She quietly nodded.
Many people believe self-defence is about overpowering an attacker, but in reality, it is about creating an opportunity to escape and survive.
I then asked Jasnoor to try escaping without giving her any instructions. Within seconds, she managed to reverse the position and free herself using a simple movement based on leverage and timing.
That moment carried an important lesson — strength is not always about physical power. Sometimes, the right technique, awareness, and presence of mind can make all the difference.
At Kombat Hall, a leading martial arts academy in Gurgaon, we often remind our students that self-defence is not just about learning techniques. It is about rebuilding confidence, understanding your own strength, and developing the mindset to respond under pressure.
We all carry strength within us, even when trauma tries to convince us otherwise. If you are living with the weight of a painful past, remember that healing is possible. Joining self-defence classes in Gurgaon or learning martial arts can be more than just physical training — it can be a step toward reclaiming control, rebuilding confidence, and rediscovering the power that has always existed within you.
