I Thought I Was Going on a Weekend Trip to Kumaon. I Came Back Listening to Birds.
Like many people, I used to think hill trips were all about cafés, viewpoints, and taking photos with the mountains in the background.
Then I spent a few days in Kumaon during the monsoon, and my idea of travel changed completely.
Instead of crowded markets, my mornings began with birdsong. Instead of traffic, there was the sound of leaves dripping after overnight rain. Every trail seemed alive with butterflies, insects, and birds I’d only ever seen in guidebooks.
What started as a camping adventure in Kumaon turned into one of the most memorable nature experiences I’ve ever had.
Our small group stayed at a forest camp near Sattal, where the day started before sunrise. A local naturalist pointed out bird calls long before we spotted the birds themselves. By breakfast, we’d already seen minivets, barbets, woodpeckers, and a pair of hornbills gliding over the valley.
What surprised me most was how different each location felt.
Sattal was peaceful, with lakes hidden beneath thick oak forests. Pangot was cooler and quieter, perfect for spotting Himalayan birds that rarely appear elsewhere. Later, near the Corbett landscape, the forests opened into grasslands where kingfishers, eagles, and owls became part of the experience.
Evenings around the campfire, surrounded by forests and star-filled skies, reminded me why so many people choose camping over hotels. There was a sense of calm that you simply can’t find in busy tourist destinations.
It wasn’t a checklist of tourist attractions — it felt like being invited into nature’s daily routine.
One thing I appreciated was that the trip wasn’t rushed. There was no pressure to “cover” as many places as possible. We spent time walking slowly, learning about local ecology, and understanding why Kumaon is considered one of India’s finest birding regions.
The journey was organized by Wildrift Adventures, a local team that has been exploring these forests for decades. What stood out wasn’t luxury or elaborate itineraries, but the knowledge of the guides and their respect for the environment. They seemed to know every trail, every viewpoint, and even which trees certain birds preferred.
That local expertise made all the difference.
If you’re planning a camping adventure in Kumaon, enjoy trekking, wildlife photography, or simply want to reconnect with nature, I’d recommend looking beyond the usual hill-station itinerary. Wake up before sunrise, leave your headphones behind, and you’ll discover that the forests have their own soundtrack.
Sometimes the best trips aren’t the ones where you do the most — they’re the ones where you finally slow down enough to notice what’s always been there.
For me, Kumaon wasn’t just another destination. It was a reminder that nature doesn’t need to be spectacular every minute to be unforgettable.
